Key Cutting and Key Duplication

Need an extra key for a family member, employee or tenant? Before ordering a duplicate, check whether the provider handles your key type and has a compatible blank. On Turn.am, explore key cutting services, provider addresses and customer reviews, then contact a specialist directly to confirm the arrangements before visiting.

Which Type of Key Do You Need?

Duplicating a standard door key, a restricted-profile key and an electronic car key involves different work. A single workshop may not support every type. Explain what the key operates, whether you have a working original and how many copies you need.

  • House, apartment or office keys: ask whether a suitable blank is available and whether the copy can be made while you wait.
  • Restricted or specialist keys: check whether a security card, key code or proof of authorisation is required. Some systems need specialist or authorised servicing.
  • Car keys: provide the make, model, year and whether a working key is available. Cutting the metal blade and programming electronic components may be separate services.
  • Intercom fobs and access cards: confirm compatibility first. Some systems require a new credential to be registered by the building manager or access system provider.

What Affects Key Duplication Prices?

The price can depend on the key type, blank, cutting requirements and any programming involved. Similar-looking keys do not necessarily cost the same to duplicate. Ask for a complete quote for your specific key.

  • Is the blank included?
  • Does the price cover one copy or a multiple-key order?
  • Is chip or remote programming included where applicable?
  • Are testing or callout charges separate?
  • What adjustment terms apply if the duplicate does not work correctly?

Turn.am does not set a standard key cutting price. Confirm the total cost and included work with the selected provider before placing your order.

Do You Need to Bring the Original?

Routine duplication usually requires a working key. If you have several copies, bring one that operates smoothly and is not visibly worn or bent. Tell the specialist about any problems before asking them to copy a damaged duplicate.

If all keys are lost, the job is different from ordinary duplication. Explain the situation and ask whether a replacement can be made for that system, what documents are needed and whether a visit is necessary. Avoid publishing restricted key codes or detailed key photographs publicly.

What If the Existing Key Sticks?

If the original is difficult to turn, catches or works only in a particular position, have the issue assessed first. The cause may be key wear, the lock or door alignment. Making an identical copy does not necessarily resolve the problem.

Explain whether other keys work properly in the same lock. This helps the provider decide whether to start by checking the key or recommend inspecting the lock.

How Long Does Key Cutting Take?

Turnaround depends on the key type, blank availability and any additional work. Ask whether you can wait on-site or need to leave an order and return later. For car keys, confirm whether the vehicle and other working keys must be present.

Checking Your New Key

Test the duplicate in the relevant lock as soon as practical. For a door key, test with the door open first if the mechanism permits. It should operate without excessive force. If it catches or resists turning, contact the provider instead of forcing it.

For electronic or car keys, test every function included in the order. Keep your receipt and clarify adjustment terms beforehand. Choose a provider based on support for your key type, location and service conditions as well as price.
