A boiler visit can lead to fault repair, planned servicing, work on connected controls, or a recommendation to assess replacement. These are different scopes. Ask the technician to identify the problem and explain the proposed decision before authorizing cost.
Breakdown repair addresses a specific failure. Routine service follows the appliance requirements and does not guarantee an unrelated fault is resolved. Replacement is a separate project involving the boiler, controls, flue and connected heating system. Request separate proposals when more than one option is presented.
Provide make, model, age if known, error code, affected functions, visible pressure, leaks, previous repairs and service history. Keep invoices, part details and past fault notes together. Do not remove the casing or access gas, combustion or electrical parts.
For gas odor, suspected leakage or a carbon-monoxide alarm, stop using the appliance, avoid flames, sparks and electrical switches, move to fresh air when safe, and contact the appropriate emergency service. Headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion may require urgent medical help.
Ask what test supports the diagnosis, the exact proposed part, whether it is compatible, labor, total price and warranties. Confirm whether the visit or diagnosis is charged separately. A code alone may not establish the final part or price.
Have the technician demonstrate heating and hot water as applicable, controls, absence of immediate errors, visible leakage and abnormal odor. Receive the work record and maintenance advice. Do not accept bypassed safety devices or improvised gas connections.

Not automatically; the fault must be diagnosed and included in the scope.
Ask for an assessment based on appliance condition, repair feasibility and connected-system requirements rather than a universal age rule.
Repeated faults need assessment. Record the code and stop repeated resets.
